Managing Diabetes

PEHP provides coverage for prescription drugs and injectible medications through our pharmacy network. PEHP offers coverage for blood pressure medications, birth control pills, insulin, diabetic supplies and almost all other prescription drugs through our Preferred Drug List. The Preferred Drug List is a listing of prescription medications that have been chosen by PEHP's Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee ( a team of physicians, nurses and pharmacists from the intermountain area). They choose medications that provide the best overall value based on quality, safety, effectiveness and cost. The Preferred Drug List can be modified periodically with changes based on the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee's recommendations. The pharmacy benefit is categorized into four copayment tiers:

  • Tier 1: Preferred generic medications that are available at the lowest copayment
  • Tier 2: Preferred brand name medications that are available at a median copayment
  • Tier 3: Non-preferred medications that are available at the highest copayment
  • Tier 4: Specialty and injectible drugs at the benefit described in your benefit summary
* Benefit design may differ from plan to plan. Please refer to your benefit summary for your actual pharmacy benefit.

Ask your physician to refer to the PEHP Preferred Drug List when he/she is choosing a prescription medication. Choosing a preferred generic or brand name drug will ensure the lowest possible copayment.

You can look up the coverage and tier level of specific medications at www.medco.com, our Preferred Drug List link
