As healthcare gets costlier and more complex, carefully consider where and how you get care to maximize your PEHP benefits.

“Know Before You Go” — that means taking a few simple steps beforehand to get the right care at the best value and avoid unnecessary large bills.



Step 1: Learn About Your Condition and Treatment Options

» Find helpful, patient-friendly tips and considerations at "Choosing Wisely®," a site launched by the ABIM Foundation with a goal of advancing a national dialogue on avoiding wasteful or unnecessary medical tests, treatments and procedures.

Step 2: Find and Compare Costs

» Search by medical services using PEHP Cost Tools. Under the the Compare Medical Costs tab, your search results will display common services based on the treatment you entered to give you a better idea of total costs at different locations where the service has been performed.

» Look for cash back opportunities available to you for using lower-cost providers. You can get between $50 and $2,000 for certain medical services. Learn more.

» Consider using a PEHP Value Provider. They include outstanding healthcare providers available to PEHP members at lower out-of-pocket costs.

» To help give you an idea of how much you may have to pay out-of-pocket for your treatment, see how much you've spent toward your yearly limits. Track your spending toward your deductible and out-of-pocket maximums when you log in to your PEHP account.

Step 3: Choose a Provider

» Search for healthcare providers in your network under the "Find a Provider" tool. Find this tool when you log in to your PEHP account. Carefully review important information and warnings for choosing the right care and avoiding unnecessary out-of-pocket bills. Step 4: Prepare for Your Appointment

» Find out if you need preauthorization.

» Know questions to ask your doctor. These tips PDF file help you understand important general questions.

» Come prepared with your prescription history. Find and print it by logging in to your PEHP account.

Step 5: After Your Appointment

» After your appointment, view your claim when you log in to your PEHP account. Share your experience with other PEHP members by reviewing your provider. Keep an eye on the message center for important messages about your benefits.

» Did you get a prescription? Price medication costs to find the best value. Log in to your PEHP account and click on “Medication Costs.”
